Beyond data protection: Cohesity-Google partnership creates backup as a service
As multicloud and hybrid cloud continue to transform the way companies operate, mass data continues to get siloed and fragmented within a patchwork of infrastructures spanning virtualized and on-premise and data centers. So what is the next step in data backup and data protection? Because data protection is just the tip of the iceberg.
“Data protection is no longer the insurance policy,” said Sai Mukundan (pictured), director of product management at Cohesity Inc. “[Customers are] really thinking about, ‘What else can I do beyond just data protection?'”
Mukundan spoke with Dave Vellante (@dvellante) and Stu Miniman (@stu), co-hosts of theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s mobile livestreaming studio, during the Google Cloud Next event in San Francisco. They discussed data backup and protection trends and their emerging partnership with Google (see the full interview with transcript here). (* Disclosure below.)

So what are customers asking for if not for data backup? They want to leverage their data for more results, according to Mukundan. This demand has led Cohesity to partner with Google to develop Cohesity’s new backup as a service called Cohesity DataPlatform, which simplifies backup and recovery of applications running in the Google Cloud for enterprises.
“This one truly is … a game changer in the sense that it’s truly backup as a service,” Mukundan said. “So, no longer does a customer need to worry about the infrastructure management aspect of things. They just go into the marketplace in as easy as a few clicks, deploy the solution, and then they are up and running in terms of being able to back up and recover. So, it’s really the SaaS model.”
Once the data is collected into one place on DataPlatform, then there is an ability to do other things with the data — like leveraging it for test dev, disaster recovery, and analytics. That’s where where the power of the Cohesity platform comes from, according to Mukundan. And partnering with Google — which announced multiple strategic partnerships this week at Google Cloud Next — on Cohesity DataPlatform has been a positive experience so far.
“Google was a very willing partner to listen to us and collaborate with us and make things happen,” he said.
