However, no one expected it to grow into the vital business tool that it is today, and certainly not so quickly. This has caught a lot of companies off-guard and thrown the traditional tech business curve for a loop. Now, even major industry players are left trying to keep up with the Cloud. To shed some light on understanding this growth, John Furrier (@furrier) and Stu Miniman (@stu), cohosts of theCUBE, from the SiliconANGLE Media team, visited the VMworld conference in Las Vegas. There, they spoke with Pat Gelsinger, CEO of VMware, Inc. Parting the clouds The discussion started with a refresher of several points from keynote speeches. Gelsinger referred to a presentation that gave clear data on what the cloud market would look like in the future. He mentioned that it’s a complex world, and customers want to know about their options concerning private, public and hybrid clouds. VMware’s goal is to give customers the tools they need for this cross-cloud environment. Gelsinger then described customer meetings where the customer said their cloud setup was a mess and asked for help. VMware decided to take that plea seriously. When he talked to customers about tools to help, the response was huge. Riding the storm The cloud has permeated enterprise to where customers are starting to take advantage, Gelsinger said. However, no one really knows how to truly take advantage, yet. Meanwhile, the customer is generally the same, an IT buyer, but VMware is gaining a broader sense of who is in its ecosystem. “The things we do are permeating more and more of the business landscape,” Gelsinger said. He stated that this is a very disruptive period for the tech industry. Consolidation is natural as the industry matures. He felt that the industry is far from done with disruptions elsewhere, but that VMware, as a company, was in a very stable place. “It feels like we’re just getting started,” Gelsinger said.
