Can VMware remain a leader in cloud services? | #VMworld

Navigating how to use cloud technology can get a little confusing. Choosing between public and private, and migrating old data to new platforms and managing data streams can become tedious for the most sophisticated enterprise. VMware, Inc. says it’s here to help companies make the tough decisions while optimizing performance on the cloud.
Bask Iyer, CIO and GM of IoT at VMware, Inc., talked with John Furrier (@furrier) and Keith Townsend (@CTOAdvisor), host and guest host of theCUBE, from the SiliconANGLE Media team, during this week’s VMworld conference about VMware and it’s goal to remain the leader in cloud services.
What’s new?
Technology is changing and updating faster and faster each year. Users want to stay ahead of the curve, and they want the optionality that comes with fast changes. VMware was the leader in private cloud and has now moved into the public cloud space as well, according to Iyer. And the company seeks to give users the freedom to choose the platform they wish to work on.
“Different workloads have different needs, and you want to provide the best flexibility,” said Iyer. VMware not only provides heightened flexibility, but also a community dedicated to platform migration, he stated.
Intelligence and infrastructure
In the past, infrastructure teams and development teams have been at odds; however, VMware has created an amicable environment for the two. Developers are in a state of continuous development at VMware, and their infrastructure has “zero issues,” said Iyer. He encourages his team to use the infrastructures of Docker and Amazon, as well as their own, in order to optimize use and innovation.
Keeping a well-run infrastructure allows for seamless migration and data analysis and can be invisible if done well, but an invisible infrastructure “is only invisible until it’s broken,” according to Iyer.
Along with a well-maintained infrastructure, Iyer emphasized the importance of intelligence gathering. Humans can only move so fast, and as discussed earlier, technology is moving ever faster. To stay current, enterprises must create software and algorithms that will garner intelligence at a rate faster than humans could hope to achieve.
“Software will trump hardware,” according to Iyer, and organizations must be prepared.
