As the digital transformation moves toward high levels of connectivity, Barracuda hopes to provide the best security possible. Rod Mathews, SVP and GM of the Data Protection Business at Barracuda Networks, Inc., talked with John Walls (@johnwalls21) and Peter Burris (@plburris), cohost of theCUBE, from the SiliconANGLE Media team, during this week’s VMworld conference about Barracuda and data security. Ransomware In recent years, the concept and reality of ransomware has only grown more apparent. Hackers are stealing information and holding it “hostage” until companies pay to have it returned, according to Mathews. Businesses are losing out on thousands of dollars due to a single breach, and what’s worse is those same hackers also offer “customer service” once the data has been returned, Mathews explained. To effectively fight back, companies need an “effective defensive and retention plan,” he said. Data as an asset The presence of ransomware and the need for tighter security have increased as data has become more of an asset for businesses. The data that companies collect is valuable not only to the organization, but anyone else in the industry. Data is spread through an organization’s infrastructure and provide multiple points of access for intrusion. Due to this easy access and interconnectivity, a company’s data “must have constant protection,” said Mathews. Security Over the past 10 years, we’ve moved from “physical assets, to digital, to cloud architecture, and now Software as a Service,” said Mathews. With more digital assets moving to the cloud, there are fewer boundaries between a company and its clients. Barracuda provides firewall protection not only for an organization’s physical asset,s but also in the cloud. They ensure that their products and services “work with public clouds” to help control any damage that may be done, according to Matthews. He added that no matter the threat, Barracuda is a leader in data security and can handle everything from ransomware to “human error.”
