Easing data management pain points: Freedom from silos | #VMworld
by Marlene Den Bleyker | Sep 1, 2015
Day two of VMworld 2015 in San Francisco kicked off with Dave Vellante and Stu Miniman of theCUBE, from the SiliconANGLE Media team, who sat down with David Flynn, cofounder and chief technology officer of Primary Data.
Free your data
Primary Data is a relatively new company providing the DataSphere platform for data management for the Cloud. According to Flynn, Primary Data is targeting the enterprise-level consumers to help manage and solve the real pain points of managing data in several storage systems.
“We are managing data in different storage systems by freeing the data from the silo environment and serving it from the side,” said Flynn, while discussing the company’s DataSphere product. The focus is on managing the metadata and routing data natively. “This solves the fundamental problems in storage,” he continued, “by having all data in a single global data space.”
Objectifying data
Flynn pointed out that immobility of data is the heart of the problem, and Primary Data is working in the language of objectives to drive the physical placement of data. He feels hyper-convergence is creating a bigger prison for data. By abstracting data away from the application, data can be referenced, even when it is moving, and scheduled where data should be.
Headquartered in Los Altos, CA, the company is run by industry veterans Lance Smith, Steve Wozniak, Rick White and Flynn, who also maintain offices in Salt Lake City, Utah, and in Tel Aviv, Israel.
The company will begin implementing its go-to-market strategy by the end of the year by targeting the enterprise-level customer.
