Back-up and data protection changing dramatically | #VMworld
by Gabriel Pesek | Aug 31, 2015
As storage options grow and become more accessible on a consumer level, tailoring those options to the needs of clients on an individual level is becoming more achievable, and efficient.
That’s the position advanced by Eric Bassier, director of product marketing at Quantum Corp. Bassier spoke with Dave Vellante of theCUBE, from the SiliconANGLE Media team, at the VMworld 2015 conference.
Consumer shift
“The nature of back-up and data protection is completely changing,” Bassier said, going on to discuss Quantum’s emphasis on tiered solutions, which keeps high-usage data quickly accessible while moving low-usage or archived data off of the primary storage. “When it comes to just storage, there’s a lot of vendors out there … with a ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach.”
For Quantum, working with its users to find the best balance of high-performance back-up and recovery with low-cost implementation is the key to success.
Kick the cartel
That attentiveness to consumer needs also serves as Quantum’s challenge to the larger storage solution companies, carried by their slogan for VMworld 2015, #kickthecartel. Explaining that “customers feel like they’re locked-in” with big storage vendors, Bassier discussed how Quantum, with the help of its new NAS storage appliance Artico, is helping to open up the consumer-end playing field with more personalized services.
Whether tiering heavy-use files or moving unstructured data to more long-term storage, Quantum wants “to understand the work-flows of [its] customers,” and in doing so continue to streamline the back-up/recovery process in terms of usability and budgeting.
