Ted Newman, Senior Director of Cloud and IT Transformation for EMC Global Services, discussed the company's take on hybrid cloud and IT transformation in the enterprise with theCUBE co-hosts Dave Vellante and John Furrier, live at VMworld 2013.
Exploring cloud trends, Newman said the solution EMC presented in their Monday session at VMworld was designed to bring apps from the public cloud back into the private cloud. As a use case example, EMC IT saved a couple million dollars by bringing apps in-house and running on VMware services. The company had developed apps for public cloud in the past, and, along with past acquisition, deployed other apps to the public cloud as a result. EMC had built a very robust platform as a service and moved some of the apps back onto it.
EMC announced new services, Newman saying he was proud of their hybrid cloud offering. "In order to make use of the public cloud, you have to have some automation and orchestration," he stated. "We help our customers to become service brokers, [which] cuts down on shadow IT." Because everything is going through one place, Newman explains: "You are acting as a gateway. You can't get the business units on board unless you have the agility that comes with automation and orchestration." IT needs to show business units how hybrid cloud helps their agility and reduces their time to market.
Commenting on IT transformation in the enterprise, Newman said, "we found the greater your scope in transforming operations, the greater your return on investment." Transformation has to be treated as an enterprise program. "Being able to tie this to new revenue or faster time to market, we were able to accelerate transformation and get everyone on board," he explained.
Asked how the company helped customers minimize the risk of going big, Newman said every such project comes with the same three goals: increase revenue, minimize risk, and reduce costs. Having an application inventory is very helpful in such situations. EMC has purchased Adaptivity, which is a great tool for getting a good inventory of apps. Newman stated, "If you map the business first, start with how do I get revenue into the door, then identify functions, processes, and apps; You determine where your priorities are."
