Dave Vellante at VMWorld 2010 hosts an interview with Jason Sommer, President of Aethion Systems and opens up the discussion by asking about "reporting", mentioning his own colleague David Foyer and the work he has done while doing analysis for PG and E, saying "we provide energy consulting when working with PG and E, we have to look at the reporting of the vendors to actually see what the utilization is and other factors, so we can calculate exactly how much energy is being saved, so he (David Foyer), has assessed that a lot." In a move a little uncharacteristic of Dave Vellante usually more reserved hosting style, he diverts his attention from the panel and asks David Foyer a statistical analysis question.
"Who are a couple of the vendors who have the best reporting?"
David Foyer's reply is inaudible, but Dave Vellante repeats what David says, for the camera, saying that Compellent is the absolute best in Foyers opinion, #1 in his view although Foyer has not evaluated all of them, but most.
Dave Vellante points out that it is shocking that most vendors don't do a better job with reporting because of what it accomplishes in helping the customers justify the expenditures.
Jason Somers elaborates by saying "A lot of competing products tack on competing like it is an afterthought....(and that is) less than useful."
offering praise to the Data Storage Company of his choice by saying "Compellent's reporting is excellent; at my fingertips I have everything I need to analyze how my storage is allocated"
Jason Sommer goes on to discuss Data Progression saying "We are in a situation where virtualization is still coming out of its infancy, those practices are still evolving, consensus is building on how to best do it."
Expressing his fear in this is the possibility of "misallocating of data"..."everybodies data is different". So far the consensus appears to be that Compellent offers the ability to properly allocate where and how the data is stored.
