Enabling effective data management in the multicloud universe
There are a number of data management strategies these days, including private or public cloud, on-premises or off-premises, or a hybrid of these solutions. Of these options, organizations are increasingly looking to multicloud and hybrid cloud computing to enable a more flexible and secure data management and storage approach.
“Now we see more data is being moved outside of the data center, and more data is being originated outside the data center,” said Scott Brindamour, senior director of the U.S. architect team, cloud hosting and information technology services at CenturyLink Inc. “So customers are really saying, ‘What do I do with all this data? Where do I put my apps? I can’t put it in my four walls. I want to move it to the cloud.'”
Brindamour and Geoff Thompson, senior director of vCloud Air Network Programs at VMware Inc., spoke with Lisa Martin (@LuccaZara), host of theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s mobile livestreaming studio, and guest host Justin Warren (@jpwarren), chief analyst at PivotNine Pty Ltd., during the VMworld conference in Las Vegas, Nevada. They discussed data migration to the cloud, the value of the CenturyLink and VMware partnership, and the importance of automation in the enterprise. (* Disclosure below.)
Staying ahead of the tech curve
The speed of technology can cause a company’s IT department, as well as its business managers, to fall behind the curve on implementing the best data solutions for their business. That is where a company like CenturyLink can help companies find the “best execution venue,” according to Brindamour.
“We’re agnostic. We’re obviously a big VMware partner, but we also do resale solutions on Azure and AWS as well. We’re a data center provider, and we can put it in our four walls on old legacy dedicated server environments as well … whatever the right venue for our customer is,” Brindamour said.
The CenturyLink and VMware partnership has proven to be extremely beneficial for both companies, according to Thompson. The expertise each company offers in different areas allows them to combine their knowledge for a better end product. For example, VMware shares with CenturyLink, and other partners, cloud-building tools and automated operations they can share with their users.
“Our partners have choice in flexibility and ease of operations, and then they expose that to their customers as well, so it’s win-win-win,” Thompson concluded.
