Time is everything in race for market share in digital transformation
In the digital transformation, big data is at the center for enterprises, but it’s not just about the size of data and databases that will ensure success. It’s about the time that it takes for the data to be transferred from the database to the applications that need it. Time is everything — and technology companies wanting to grow in their offerings for enterprises must pay heed to this reality.
“The real lever there is time. People want more time back in their day,” said Brian Reagan (pictured), chief marketing officer of Actifio Inc. “Let’s serve that need. Let’s solve the time problem, and all of a sudden digital transformation becomes a reality.”
Reagan spoke with John Furrier (@furrier) and Dave Vellante (@dvellante), co-hosts of theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s mobile livestreaming studio, during the VMworld conference in Las Vegas, Nevada. They discussed how Actifio is meeting customers demands for technology to give them more time. (* Disclosure below.)
Implementing CI-CD
So why is time so crucial for technology companies to capitalize on? For Reagan, it’s about implementing continuous integration and continuous development, or CI-CD, for large enterprises no matter how difficult it might be due to the size of their databases.
“Continuous development is really easy when you’re talking about megabyte-sized [JavaScript Object Notation] files,” Regan said. “When you talk about 100-terabyte databases, it becomes really hard.”
Reagan gave an example of Aetna Inc., which has tens of multi-terabyte databases within its operations. “They want to be able to serve those multi-terabyte databases out to their developers within minutes, as opposed to weeks or months or however long it takes traditional operations,” Reagan described.
Actifio’s job is to help collapse the time cycle so that a daily data check-in for developers is possible — no matter how large the data. “We have cracked the code on how to do really application-native virtualization of data and the ability to serve it up through workflows, through automation in some of the largest enterprises in the world,” Reagan stated.
So far, Actifio has had successful use cases. It has been able to give one major bank an extra quarter of time back in a year with their initial phase of deployment, according to Reagan. “That, quite frankly, if you put a dollar value on it, is measured in the hundreds of millions of dollars,” he concluded.
