An ecosystem of technology: Modernizing data in a multicloud world
Modernization and cloud are two words that describe the tech industry today. Enterprise storage company Cohesity Inc.’s approach is no different. Its main focus is to consolidate customer data silos by innovating data centers and moving into the hybrid cloud world, according to Lynn Lucas (pictured), chief marketing officer of Cohesity.
The company has expanded its reach by building an ecosystem of technology by partnering with VMware Inc., Nutanix Inc., Pure Storage, and other cloud providers. “I don’t think any vendor today could operate on their own,” Lucas said. “We really provide that complement to VMware for customers that are looking for a way to modernize their data center.”
Cohesity’s platform can also back up and instantly restore virtual machines in the case of a disaster and allows movement to the cloud (and back) for development testing, she explained.
Lucas spoke with Stu Miniman (@stu), host of theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s mobile livestreaming studio, and guest host Justin Warren (@jpwarren), during the VMworld conference in Las Vegas, Nevada. They discussed Cohesity’s role in data consolidation and its partnership with VMware. (* Disclosure below.)
The future of business in a multicloud world
While Cohesity offers hyperconverged secondary storage with the Cohesity DataPlatform, the company’s newest addition, Helios, provides a single, global, unified view of all secondary data and applications that a company might have.
“It’s [software as a service] … but it’s not just dashboard or monitoring. It is active management, which is really going to bring about great efficiencies for the IT organization,” Lucas described.
With the new “freemium” edition of Helios, users have the ability to not only see the secondary data and apps, but they also have the capability to roll out automated policies globally, helping IT advance operational efficiency, according to Lucas. Machine learning capabilities have already been built into Helios’ technology.
Operating effectively in a multicloud environment requires choosing the cloud for the right set of workloads, Lucas explained. Plus, another key element to multicloud operational success is minimizing silos in the cloud. Cohesity with Helios, however, works across any environment, cloud or otherwise, to make data migration and management easier for users, Lucas added.
“What we aim to do is create that invisible kind of layer so that IT can focus more on helping the business,” Lucas said. “Some very large enterprise and government customers have seen the benefits in adopting the new scale-out, hyperconverged platform.”
Those customers range from Hyatt Hotels Corp. to the U.S. Air Force, according to Lucas.
