From GDPR to workplace diversity: Inclusive approach, not scare tactics, works best, says Veritas
Scary sells. That’s often the approach used by many companies when customers have to deal with new laws or regulations where the penalty for non-compliance could be significant. And there may be nothing scarier right now in the data governance arena than the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation, or GDPR, scheduled to go into enforceable effect in May, 2018.
Mishandling of EU citizens’ data could trigger large fines and future penalties for businesses, but one Veritas Technologies LLC executive is taking an approach that focuses on bringing customer information technology teams together with their legal and regulatory departments to calmly strategize the best solutions.
“I think of it as ‘b to h,’ business to human. What we’ve done is definitely not a scare tactic. I don’t believe in the fear, uncertainty and doubt,” said Lynn Lucas (pictured), chief marketing officer at Veritas Technologies LLC.
Lucas visited theCUBE, SiliconANGLE’s mobile livestreaming studio, and spoke with co-hosts Dave Vellante (@dvellante) and Stu Miniman (@stu) during the Veritas Vision conference in Las Vegas, Nevada. They discussed the company’s marketing approach to customers regarding GDPR and the importance of workplace diversity. (* Disclosure below.)
Digestible content for GDPR rules
The complexity of GDPR has created confusion for many firms doing business in Europe over where the priorities are and how budgets should be allocated. The Veritas marketing organization has broken down the regulations into one-page infographics, what Lucas refers to as “snackable pieces of content.” These allow different groups inside a corporate organization to digest relevant information, and Veritas uses this material to involve stakeholders in the overall GDPR strategy.
“We’re on a real digitization journey. It’s not about how to go around; it’s how do I bring you with me,” Lucas said.
The gender gap in the technology industry today is hard to miss, with women currently holding only one-quarter of computing jobs, according to the National Center for Women and& Technology. Veritas has partnered with Accenture in Women at Vision Empowered, or WAVE, a joint initiative to advance women in technology through workshops and networking.
“When we have diversity, we have a breadth of ideas that makes it a better place to work and, frankly, better innovation in whatever field you are in,” Lucas said. “While we would all like it to be a world that is neutral and bias-free, we’re not quite there yet.”
