Virtualization efforts move full-speed ahead at Scania
For any significantly sized information technology company today, guaranteed uptimes and near-instant recovery post-data loss are essential. In competitive marketplaces, failure to remain up-to-date with the latest solutions and methods for salvaging one’s information can be a near-fatal blow.
Scania (Great Britain) Ltd., which manufactures trucks, buses, coaches and engines, is getting beyond this hurdle primarily via backup, disaster recovery and virtualization management software. “I think like most other companies at the moment, we’re finding that more and more of our services are changing to be in digital services,” said Harley Carter, solutions architect at Scania (Great Britain) Ltd.
At this year’s VeeamOn 2017 in New Orleans, Louisiana, Dave Vellante (@dvellante) and Stu Miniman (@stu), co-hosts of theCUBE, SiliconANGLE’s mobile livestreaming studio, spoke with Carter about how he’s been modernizing Scania’s relationship with its customers. (* Disclosure below.)
Data protection top of mind
The oft-discussed “digital transformation” in technology circles ends up meaning little more or less than an influx of digital solutions to previous analog problems, according to Carter. “So our infrastructure, we’re pretty much … 95 percent virtualized these days,” he said.
It’s not just backups and storage that Scania is enhancing, but also the equally vital aspect of data protection. Given the recent malware attacks across the globe, the need for such precautions grows each day. Through virtualization and Veeam Software Inc.’s products, Carter said this task will become a slightly simpler one.
“There are a lot of different options in Veeam, and lots of different ways of doing basically the same thing,” Carter stated. “But it makes it simple for us; we don’t have to invest a huge amount of time tailoring solutions to different applications. A couple of ticked boxes and change a few numbers, and we’re basically there.”
