Dave Vellante and Jeff Kelly, theCUBE co-hosts, broadcasted live from the 2013 Tableau Customer Conference this week in Washington DC, interviewing Rich Ghiossi, VP of Marketing with Treasure Data.
Previously employed as VP of Marketing at ParAccel, Ghiossi is responsible for developing and executing Treasure Data's marketing and communications strategy. In their own words, Treasure Data strives to "become the cloud analytics hub for businesses to transform big data into immediate value."
"We not only provide the kind of database infrastructure, but we also provide some of the integration capabilities. So, if you're using Big Data, web data or log data we have an agent technology that we can embed in those systems and load information in at very high rates," explained Ghiossi.
Leveraging AWS for security infrastructure
Talking about security in the cloud, Ghiossi elaborated: "We run on Amazon, using it as a platform, with our own database. But we leverage all of their security services, taking advantage of that. Many of the applications we're looking for and doing today are the ones where information has been aggregated at a higher level."
Treasure Data is not partnering up with Amazon in the sense that they are offering a service. Treasure Data is basically utilizing the AWS infrastructure, dealing with security, scaling and compatibility issues, as well as with API and performance.
"We also provide a console environment for a particular user -- so that they can look at their instance that's running in the service and know exactly what's going on, what jobs are or aren't running, what the performance looks like -- we give them a ton of information. They can leverage Tableau in the cloud or use traditional Tableau," Ghiossi noted.
How to build for analytics
Speaking of analytics, Vellante wanted to know whether or not Ghiossi considered a full blown analytics platform or using some analytics apps. "We are a solution right now for the kind of apps that we're looking at," replied Ghiossi. "We build dashboards for particular areas, such as gaming, digital media, as well as others."
Jeff Kelly asked Ghiossi how he saw the world of Big Data evolving, in terms of on-premise vs. the cloud. There is this trend of the cloud becoming the dominant deployment model, however, most of the enterprise deployments are behind a firewall. Rich Ghiossi replied:
"There's people who are going to build on-premise things for a long time. But I think we're at the beginning of a big trend. The ability to have computing services outsourced to someone else is the right thing to do. Why should companies be spending so much money just focusing resources on getting their infrastructure in place to actually support the business? The higher percentage of people that can be supporting the business, the better that company's going to be, and cloud is going to enable that. We are at the front end of that."
As for Big Data, Ghiossi reckons "there's an issue with people not knowing all they don't know about Big Data. If you can give them a solution that's low friction and they can get up and running really quickly, it's going to start to expand the market. Right now we're in love with social and the web data, and there's great value in those markets, but it's a long way ahead of us. We're just starting to talk about sensor data, and all the different areas where we could put sensors. I think that market is going to explode."
