Legacy database systems had their place in time, but their benefits are not necessarily expendable. That’s one reason why MongoDB has appealed to so many.
George Gilbert, cohost of theCUBE, from the SiliconANGLE Media team, spoke with Dev Ittycheria, president and CEO of MongoDB, Inc., during Structure 2015. Ittycheria shared how the company is helping with the Internet of Things (IoT), Big Data, real-time analytics and more.
Many classic features are available on the MongoDB platform, and that has helped adoption, as well as integrating business intelligence features — all without special tools. It is portable to any environment, such as cloud, hybrid, on-prem and more.
MongoDB has a great story. The founders of DoubleClick (now owned by Google) once served billions of advertisements per day. This required a robust system that was scalable and could sustain its tremendous growth. This was the catalyst for the database product we see today.
That same spirit of needs and solutions is alive and well in the thriving MongoDB ecosystem. One of the interesting factoids shared by Ittycheria is that every single one of the Fortune 100 companies either use its systems or they are a customer.
Databases with unique needs require flexibility
In an interesting example from the field, the Robert Bosch GmbH company (also known as Bosch) is driving the creation of products in IoT. With a variety of sensors, unstructured data, video, graphic information, and other points of information that do not fit into the classic world of databases, the needs are unique but require flexibility. MongoDB has provided the dynamic platform they require and saved them effort and the expense of reinventing systems.
In another interesting example, a mobile watch company has integrated a driver behavior feedback system. With this information, insurance companies can rate their policies based on the behavior of drivers with greater accuracy.
The community version is free, and it upgrades to a commercial product that has advanced features, such as security, management, analytics and scale. The savings and productivity gains that are introduced on MongoDB are pitted against the sales and pricing tactics of large incumbent companies, and the company is winning conversations.
