Sanjay Marimahdaiah, HP, and Chris Selland, Vertica, at Strata 2013 with Dave Vellante
"We are here to solve customers Big Data problems with an integrated solution," Chris Selland, VP of Marketing, HP Vertica, shared in theCube, live at Strata 2013. The conference marks Hewlett-Packard's biggest presence in the space thus far, as the company has strongly focused on Big Data since the summer of 2012, integrating Vertica with Hardoop and partnering with Cloudera. HP customers now get an appliance where they can push data into Hardoop.
Big Data is now moving from the exclusive interest of IT and captures the attention of CFOs, COOs, and CMOs, who now want to know what they can do with it. HP is focusing on delivering information optimization solutions which bring business values to customers.
"We hate when companies throw away data," Selland said. In the current HP offering, Vertica is the engine for analyzing data, while Hardoop is where it is gathered and cataloged. HP can help bridge BI and data warehousing, and takes a partnering approach to the matter. Just on the Vertica side, the company already has about 40 partners, thus working with a broad partner ecosystem.
"HP is a strong player in Big Data because we have solutions in every layer of the stack," with Sanjai Marimadaiah, HP Strategy & Product Development -- Big Data Solutions, explained. HP provides everything, from hardware, to software and services. Services, in HP's vision, has two handles: business value level and infrastructure level, and the company provides solutions for both. That is why "HP is very well positioned for Big Data."
When it comes to data management, the traditional concepts hold, but the problem is how they scale in Big Data. "It is really about where technology meets business value." The current challenge is to deliver business solutions to the market and scale them for Big Data. When it comes to data, "it's not just how big it is, but also how fast is moving," Selland said.
Big Data is currently gaining great momentum, with adoption on the rise, but it still is miles away from being main stage. When it comes to HP's strategy and vision for Big Data, the company addresses the issue holistically, as it handles data from its creation through analyses and to aging and storage.
