Splunk brings data visualization to business users | #splunkconf
by Nelson Williams | Sep 23, 2015
Big Data is the engine that drives the modern business world, but data without context is just noise. Making sense of all that information requires special tools and techniques. Because Big Data is so new, the technology behind those tools is still in development. One company focused on making sense of Big Data is Splunk, Inc., and it is stepping up to offer its products to business world.
To help understand where Splunk is going, John Furrier and Jeff Frick, cohosts of theCUBE, from the SiliconANGLE Media team, spoke to Alys Woodward, Research Director with IDC, during Splunk .conf2015.
Things started off with a question about how Splunk relates to its customers. Woodward replied that Splunk takes its lead from the customers and the customer experience. The company looks at how its customers use the applications, and then it incorporates that into the next round of products.
Visualization brings data into focus
Woodward pointed out that raw data is a horrible thing to look at and that making the data visual was a vital step for finding the value in the information. Splunk’s products help the user see that value. With this focus on visualization as a user experience, Splunk has been very successful. Now, the company is looking to bring its offerings to the business user.
Although the business market is open to opportunity, it’s also a source of many challenges. The business community is very fragmented, with every industry having unique legacies and needs. Splunk will have to tailor its lineup to meet a wide range of customer demands, according to Woodward.
Rising to meet the Internet of Things
The Internet of Things (IoT) represents the near future where millions or billions of electronic devices are sharing data. Managing that data will be a huge market. Using analytics to organize and take value from the data provided by IoT could be a place where Splunk shines.
Because the data in IoT comes from so many sources, no one approach will be able to handle it all. This is great for Splunk, since the secret of its success lies in bringing data from multiple sources together into one view.
