How one company is making programming solutions simpler | #SparkSummit
by Timothy Walden | Jun 8, 2016
With so much new technology and a big push toward open-source platforms, things can get a little confusing. Stacks of data and mountains of coding are becoming harder to manage, but where there’s a will there’s a way. Cask Data, Inc. helps businesses manage platforms like Apache Spark while allowing for full application building capabilities.
Steve Huber, SVP of Global Sales at Cask Data, talked with John Walls and George Gilbert (@ggilbert41), cohosts of theCUBE, from the SiliconANGLE Media team, during the Spark Summit 2016 about how Cask Data is making programming solutions simpler.
Tapping the Cask
Cask has been around for more than four years and helps companies build apps on open-source platforms like Spark. It allows companies to be more flexible when creating new programs and agile if they need to switch platforms.
Cask has great portability, according to Huber, which can directly translate to operability. It takes the various pieces of the process and makes sure they’re all speaking the same language.
In a way, it simplifies the steps to allow the user more flexibility to be creative, and that “helps enable consumption and growth,” says Huber.
How does it work?
Cask is an extraction layer that sits atop and works in conjunction with Spark. It allows organizations to build data pipelines and even fully functioning applications. It was designed like a developer platform and that added functionality allows for faster problem solving and a variety of solutions. With the maneuverability that Cask provides, companies are able to better leverage their own data streams.
Cask can do a lot for an organization, and it is constantly improving, Huber stated. The company’s main focuses are data creations, enabling data scientists, and a 360-degree concern for the customer.
