IT becoming like modern car industry, says Fujitsu executive
The modern landscape of information technology is changing rapidly, and computing services provider Fujitsu Ltd. is comparing that landscape to the way car companies are changing the way they make cars for customers.
“When I was young … I bought a car, and then I started to integrate different things: a stereo, speaker systems, whatsoever kind of fancy things,” said Wolfgang Hopfes, head of SAP business, EMEIA, at Fujitsu Technology Solutions. “Today, you order a car in a completely different way. You have a configuration tool at your manufacturer of choice … and then you click, and you get the car which is perfectly designed for you in a different way of standards. And this is exactly my vision of what I want to achieve in the IT world.”
Hopfes spoke with Lisa Martin (@LuccaZara), co-host of theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s mobile livestreaming studio, and guest host Keith Townsend (@CTOAdvisor), principal at The CTO Advisor, during the SAP Sapphire Now event in Orlando, Florida. They discussed how IT can become more consumable for businesses. (* Disclosure below.)
Friendlier IT
There are important ways that Fujistu is achieving this idea, according to Hopfes. The biggest thing is that IT cannot provide just separate components anymore. “We are delivering an up-and-running platform,” Hopfes said.
Another thing is that the risk must be taken away from the customer. “So that means we give service levels, we give maintenance, we offer managed services so that the customer can really focus on their business instead of wasting energy on his IT systems,” Hopfes explained.
As Fujistu continues to provide an up-and-running system, partnerships with other companies like SAP SE and NetApp Inc. continue to grow so that each company can integrate together into better systems for customers.
“We are combining the different technology worlds with the special needs for our customers,” Hopfes said. “This is what we are doing.”
