Post merger: Dell aims to deliver ready, deployable infrastructure
The merger between Dell and EMC has created one of the largest players in the cloud computing and data analytics industries. The two organizations each provided complementary services that support different facets of the business, and the resulting company aims to take advantage of that by expanding its offerings to customers, especially around SAP SE.
“One of the first things that we’ve been bringing together is we have two very complementary Hana portfolios,” said Jason Kotsaftis, senior director of database solutions at Dell Technologies Inc.
Kotsaftis spoke with John Furrier (@furrier), co-host of theCUBE, SiliconAngle Media’s mobile live streaming studio, from SiliconANGLE’s Palo Alto, California, studio. They discussed his vision for the future of Dell EMC and SAP, as well as news from the SAP Sapphire Now conference. (* Disclosure below.)
A new lineup of offerings
One of the increasingly visible paradigm shifts is the move from building infrastructure to buying it as a service. Dell EMC hopes to address the pain points that arise during this transition by offering more services.
“If you look at where the SAP customers spend most of their money, it’s the operational expenses of administering and maintaining the SAP landscape,” Kotsaftis said. He explained that with the new Dell and EMC combination, they are in an excellent position to deliver valuable services to customers that affect their bottom line.
“Workflow automation, copy, clone, refresh, backup recovery, performance automation, disaster recovery … the whole goal is to deliver a ready infrastructure to the customer that they can just deploy,” Kotsaftis stated. This is especially true for the migration of mission-critical business operations to cloud infrastructure.
“As much as we see people wanting to move to the cloud, there are still people that want to have certain production systems they want to control. And they may not want to give that off to the cloud yet,” Kotsaftis stated. “With this new relationship, we’re blending in Enterprise Hybrid Cloud and Virtustream. We can actually allow them to have that choice.”
Virtustream was a recent acquisition by Dell EMC that extends the company’s public cloud offerings to combine with their on-premises offering to offer hybrid cloud solutions, Kotsaftis explained.
