Technology curves shortening dramatically, says Apcera CEO | #RHSummit
Change is the only certainty in life, they say — and Derek Collison, CEO of Apcera, Inc., seems to agree when it comes to tech. In an interview with theCUBE during Red Hat Summit, Collison said the landscape is changing quickly and enterprises are working hard to make sense of all the options.
“We just had our three-year anniversary, and we are really trying to figure out where all this is going,” he said. “We have these massive disruptions around PaaS and what PaaS was kind of defined as early on … and we have microservices, and Cloud, and private Cloud, and OpenStack, and so there’s just a tremendous amount of technology and direction.”
With all this change, he said, “Enterprises are … really hungry for information about ‘what do we do with all this stuff?’”
Changes in the market
This is leading to some interesting changes in the market.
“And I think what’s fascinating about the technology curves that we’re in is that they are shortening,” Collison pointed out. “And so if you looked at virtualization, it had a good 10-plus year run, and now all of a sudden containers are kind of the hot thing.”
But even containers, he thinks, may be replaced within a few years. “Everything is being compressed, and by something better, faster, cheaper (pick two),” he said. “But it’s interesting to see, and it’s a fun time to be part of the industry.”
The direction of hybrid Cloud
He also commented on the definition and direction of hybrid Cloud.
“Most people think it’s private to public. … But what we’ve seen actually more is public to public, which we talked about, meaning, well, I’ve got all my eggs in one basket, and it’s … not as much about cost anymore, it’s about ‘I really want that service for this one app.’ I want Watson to be able to power this one app, but I have all the other stuff, let’s say, in Amazon,” Collison stated. “And so how do I do that? I don’t want to have to spin up a whole new crew or retrain them on how to manage another public Cloud and how to deploy or port apps to it.”
Given this problem, many companies are stepping in to fill the gap and ensure smooth transitions, enabling wider adoption of services across the industry.
“And so there’s an interesting thing of Apcera’s technology, and others as well, to smooth that over so it’s trivial, no friction to move,” he said.
