Red Hat technologist talks NFV innovations and an open source world | #RHSummit
Chris Wright, chief technologist for Red Hat, Inc., sat down with theCUBE cohosts Dave Vellante and Stu Miniman to discuss new developments in the open source world and Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) in telecom networks. Red Hat’s NFV platform, which is built on Red Hat Enterprise Linux OpenStack® Platform, is massively scalable and elastic, making it an ideal choice for telecommunications providers. The platform offers Clouds that scale, improved virtualization and networking features, built-in security and speed.
As the person who helps define Red Hat’s strategic vision, Wright has seen conversations shift from cost of ownership to innovation. “Today, there is a shift to operationalize complex systems,” he says. “There has been a change in open source technology from commoditization to a place where real innovation is happening and new services are introduced quickly.”
The enterprise warms up to open source
Wright believes that the enterprise is warming up to open source as it realizes the financial benefit. “It’s compelling to see the effect of adding APIs and using programs to manage infrastructure, which could change the ratio from 100 to 1,000 servers per admin,” he says.
Regarding recent technological developments, the notion that Linux is ubiquitous and DevOps is a common development model are exciting to Wright. “DevOps takes what we’ve been doing — release early, release often — to the next level,” he says. “Recognize failures as quickly as you can to move forward.”
