HPE and Pensando collaborate on new paradigm for distributed services
BY MARK ALBERTSON
If one product could power software-defined cloud, compute, storage, security and networking services, that would cover a lot of ground in the enterprise space. This is what Pensando Systems Inc. and its partner — Hewlett Packard Enterprise Co. — are banking on.
HPE is both an investor and customer for Pensando, which is developing and marketing its unique distributed computing platform to provide compute solutions wherever data is generated.
“Instead of selling a classic server, HPE now has the ability to provide the security, networking and storage solutions to their customers,” said Prem Jain (pictured), chief executive officer of Pensando. “It’s a model that’s unprecedented in the sense that it’s totally distributed. Customers enable whatever service they need there even if they didn’t plan it in the past.”
Jain spoke with Stu Miniman, host of theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio, during Pensando’s Future Proof Your Enterprise event. They discussed the cost benefits of Pensando’s solution and recent engagement with major cloud providers and large firms. (* Disclosure below.)
Elimination of roundtrip transfers
Pensando’s solution moves services such a network, storage and security, which have been traditionally bound in a data center, to whatever server is actually processing the data. This eliminates roundtrip data transfers for processing while offering higher performance and lower cost.
“It’s a very cost-effective way of deploying these services,” Jain explained. “This is a new paradigm, a world of distributed services. It will allow customers to scale up or scale down whatever is needed.”
Pensando appears to be gathering momentum after emerging from stealth mode in October. The company has grown its team to 250 employees and rolled out multiple product releases to cloud and enterprise customers.
Pensando is also “working with two or three major cloud vendors,” according to Jain, and is conducting trials with large Fortune 500 firms.
“We are doing a proof-of-concept with very large enterprise customers,” Jain said. “These are name brand customers and will deploy different capabilities of the product starting in Q3 and Q4 of this year.”
