Oracle‘s long years of investment in engineering is paying off in a big way, said John Fowler, EVP of Systems at Oracle. The goal, he explained, was to build, “bigger, more powerful systems that are more cost effective because they’re integrated.” A strategy like that, though clear-cut, can take a long time to come to fruition. Years of research and development, hiring the right talent and acquiring the right companies, has finally manifested in the fifth generation of Oracle products, said Fowler.
The Oracle datacenter, Fowler continued, is less expensive and easier for businesses to use because Oracle is “engineering so [customers] don’t have to.” Their original goal was to build comprehensive, “super high speed databases” that would make business processes more effective because they enable access to “everything at once.”
Indeed, Fowler said it’s Oracle’s comprehensive strategy that makes the tech giant so successful. “All of our products are 100 percent Oracle,” he boasted. This includes the many hundreds of engineered systems and all of the storage and compute resources, Fowler explained. The networking resources Oracle uses are also quickly “becoming Oracle,” as are the “in-cloud data centers, all the Oracle infrastructure, and all [the Oracle] software stack,” Fowler stated.
Underscoring his previous point, Fowler added that, after five generations of products since acquiring computing software and IT services provider Sun Microsystems Inc., Oracle is beginning to “use the word cheap.” This is a new approach for Oracle, but one Fowler feels is accurate. By building a complete solution, Fowler believes that Oracle has become “the most cost effective vendor in the industry.”
