Does the hybrid Cloud truly exist? | #OSSV15
by Betsy Amy-Vogt | Aug 26, 2015
Standardizing the interface between “the world of tools and the infrastructure to build apps, and the systems that take apps and run them,” was the topic of conversation with Craig McLuckie, senior product manager at Google, who spoke to John Furrier and Jeff Frick on @theCUBE, during OpenStack Silicon Valley 2015.
“Hybrid needs to be first and foremost about being able to use a common set of technologies,” he said. In a theme that ran throughout the interview, McLuckie emphasized that it is about “looking to create common abstraction.”
Asked if the hybrid Cloud truly exists, McLuckie told theCUBE’s John Furrier, “It exists, but not the way people think of it existing.” He explained that, in his opinion, a true hybrid Cloud will only exist when there is a common set of abstractions, tools and patterns available to people everywhere.

McLuckie mentioned so-called “Google envy,” where enterprise wants to have DevOps and Cloud-native infrastructure available but can’t afford the massive investment required. Currently Cloud native is the domain of Internet giants such as Google, Facebook, eBay and Netflix, but, according to McLuckie, when the Internet of Things (IoT) becomes real, every enterprise will need to be an Internet company.
However, McLuckie thinks it is a dangerous assumption that you have to go fully along the “API-ification” path to accomplish becoming Cloud native. “If you force API-ification you’re going to alienate a broad array of customers and create cognitive hurdles,” he said. His mission is to bring technology to enterprise so that customers have immediate value without having to make huge investments.
