SiliconANGLEs theCUBE welcomed the co-chair of this year's MIT Chief Development Officer Information Quality Symposium, Peter Anlyan of Anlyan Consulting. Wikibon's Jeff Kelly and Dave Vellante spoke with Anlyan about his involvement with MITCDOIQ, his background and how to most effectively work with your team to maximize their productivity. Anlyan joined the MITCDOIQ team a few years ago after having attended in previous years. Currently, Anlyan's firm consults in the healthcare industry and he immediately recognized parallels between challenges faced in his own industry and the field of information science. Prior to starting his consulting firm, Anlyan worked for two decades as a broadcast news producer and then served as the general manager of minor league baseball team, the Durham Bulls. His experience in sports makes him well-suited to work with organizations to recognize teams within an organization and their strengths and opportunities for growth. According to Anlyan, team building, motivation, engagement and spreading vision works as well in the fields of healthcare, public industry and finance as it does in the sports world. Another area each of these have in common was brought to light by the use Sabermetrics, the methodology employed by the 2002 Oakland A's and made famous in the book and movie, 'Moneyball'. Anlyan, speaking specifically to the healthcare industry and its adoption of data analysis, addressed the challenges associated with its implementation. He likened the physician to being the pitcher on the team. In trying to usher in data to revolutionize the industry, it's necessary to start from the top down, helping to establish a culture that says change is necessary. As CDOs operate within their teams, Anlyan cites John Kotter of Harvard Business School who drew a clear distinction between leading and management. As Kotter noted, leading is coping with change where management is coping with complexity. Vellante, Kelly and Anlyan rounded out the rest of the interview discussing how best to work with the different personalities that exist within an organization. Anlyan's firm tackles this head-on by identifying, as he put it, how to be a 5-tool player, harkening back to his baseball days. This is achieved by not only determining what the 5 tools are for a specific industry, but then determining how many your team possesses and what they lack. Anlyan helps CDOs (specifically in the healthcare industry) to recognize the most effective means of implementing the use of big data and analytics within an organization.
