IBM offers data insight services with Twitter | #IBMinsight
by Heather Johnson | Oct 29, 2015
Are you looking for Twitter data? Visit IBM’s Information and Insights as a Service department, which analyzes data from Twitter Inc., The Weather Company and other sources to deliver insights for customers.
The new cloud-based services use analytic models to simplify the process of combining internal and external data, and then find and connect important signals to deliver insights.
“Our goal is to help people understand the data that’s out there in the real world,” Joel Cawley, GM of IBM’s Information and Insights as a Service, told Dave Vellante and Paul Gillin, cohosts of theCUBE, from the SiliconANGLE Media team, during IBM Insight 2015. “There are systems that can understand the world, and systems that can reason about the world. My focus is on understanding. This starts with understanding people, places, things, and events in lots of different data sources. There’s no easy way to put those pieces together in a way that’s understandable.”
IBM’s Bluemix Platform as a Service
IBM Insight APIs for Developers can be accessed from IBM’s Bluemix Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) to incorporate historical and forecasted weather data from The Weather Company into web and mobile apps. Developers can also incorporate Twitter content enriched with sentiment insights from IBM, Decahose or PowerTrack streams.
Cawley added that he has other sources on his wish list. That list includes companies in the consumer, geospatial and IoT spaces.
In the meantime, Cawley and team have their hands full with their current sources, most notably Twitter. “The key is understanding what voices to listen to,” Cawley said of analyzing Twitter data.
“You have to know what elements of the data set are worth pulling out and how to use them. For example, there are actually 65 different data fields associated with each Tweet that you can analyze in different ways.”
Will the Insights as a Service team analyze data to predict next year’s presidential election? Cawley says not personally, but he wouldn’t be surprised if it happens.
