Scott Francis, BP3, at IBM Impact 2014 with John Furrier and Paul Gillin @thecube #IBMimpact Scott Francis, CTO at BP3, discussed the latest trends in business processes and how his company adapts to changes in the industry with theCUBE co-hosts Paul Gillin and John Furrier, during a live interview from IBM Impact 2014. Francis said that for BP3, this was the fifth time attending IBM Impact and “every year we’ve increased our investment on the conference. It’s really just a great time for us to be here.” BP3 focuses on major themes in technology, including mobile, cloud, on-demand deployment of infrastructure, but “at the end of the day our job is to help our customers,” who in turn have to help their own customers. “To us, what gives meaning to all this interesting infrastructure, what adds value is the business process.” Francis explained that for some companies, their whole business processes have to be redesigned from scratch. Current technology needs different processes than five years ago, he explains, “You have to reevaluate what matters to the customers as the market changes.” Commenting on the move to the cloud, Francis said that business process assets were not moved to the cloud, but as other processes they interact with are in the cloud, they are easily being deployed in the cloud. “People underestimate how big the private hosting, internal infrastructure market really is,” he added . Although some businesses have been disrupted, as Amazon shook up the retail industry, there wasn’t much of a whiplash for traditional businesses, such as banking or financial services. There is however a “realization that rethinking their business process is called for,” Francis said. IBM Cloud is “much smoother” . Asked if the IBM cloud was appealing to enterprise customers, Francis comments that for enterprise customers using IBM software and services, deploying on IBM Cloud is much smoother than other cloud services and comes with a different level of support. Commenting on hybrid cloud as a business strategy, Francis said “that is the transition. There will be a lot of hybrid solutions, you need a trusted partner to set that up right.” This comprises a good strategy for IBM, as they provide a path forward for customers to move assets to the cloud. Asked about the current mindset around developers, Francis said “there is so much more possible as a developer as in what you can develop easily. The tools have gotten so much better. Developers have an immense dose of optimism in what they can do with software today.” For developers, “it’s becoming… easier to build up a solution using the cloud for the prototype.” Francis explained.
