IBM scales up layered cybersecurity strategy to boost data resiliency and security
For Banco Bradesco, one of the largest banking and financial services companies in Brazil, resilience matters.
With 1.5 billion monthly transactions for 72 million customers, Bradesco depends on availability for its services. And IBM’s z15 enterprise platform helps make it happen.
“We can design solutions for seven nines of availability, and that’s the reason why clients like Bradesco rely on us for their resilient banking platform,” said Matt Whitbourne (pictured, right), offering lead and program director at IBM. “Z has been at the forefront of resilience for many generations now, whether that’s the scale that our systems are able to provide or the ability to tap into more capacity as needed. It’s never been more important for clients.”
Whitbourne spoke with Dave Vellante, host of theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s mobile livestreaming studio, during the IBM Think Digital Event Experience. He was joined by Michael Jordan (pictured, left), distinguished engineer at IBM, and they discussed security for systems across the stack and how IBM leverages encryption at the microprocessor level. Encrypted data
Banks care about resilient systems, but security is critical as well. Security and privacy features are key elements of the z15 platform released last year. In April, IBM extended z15 security protections to include Secure Execution for Linux.
“We have it in our culture to build systems that are secure and robust. That’s part of our DNA,” Jordan said. “We own the whole stack. We can design and architect solutions at the right point in the stack and across the stack as needed to really deliver on these security capabilities.”
Sound security practice also stipulates that safe data is encrypted data. However, an ongoing concern for information-technology managers is that data encryption can slow system performance. IBM addressed this issue in September by including accelerated encryption for z15 at the microprocessor level.
“Encrypting data on massive scale is the foundation for a layered cybersecurity strategy,” Jordan said. “Each core is capable of encrypting up to 14 gigabytes of data per second. If you multiply that by the number of cores you have, it’s an encryption powerhouse.”
