Alastair Winner, HP, at HP Discover Barcelona 2013 with John Furrier and Dave Vellante
Alastair Winner, VP, HP Technology Services Networking, discussed the latest mobility and networking trends with theCUBE co-hosts John Furrier and Dave Vellante, live at the 2013 edition of HP Discover in Barcelona.
Describing his role in HP, Winner said his department was part of the enterprise group. "I have a specific focus on our networking solutions and our mobility solutions." They focus on helping customers to "navigate the world of networking and mobility to get business value."
Commenting on the most frequent customer demands, Winner said "it's clearly returning the value as soon as they can, it's really driving the value as quickly and as efficiently as possible."
"We're focused on the mobility aspect of IT service delivery," Winner explained, adding that IT companies and IT providers inside the organization were really struggling to maximize value and deliver end user productivity to their teams.
"We look at every aspect of mobility," Winner stated, from keybords to smart phones and tablets. "What we are really trying to do is virtualize that engagement." In terms of use cases, there is a big focus on connecting the social aspect, supported by HP's strong partnership with Microsoft in that area. "We also look at things at having a hybrid environment around Exchange and Office 365. We also look at data -- SharePoint, Dropbox, those types of solutions and making them available to a user on their own personal devices."
"We're very much focused on helping enterprise IT," Winner said, which traditionally was the control point of IT, they would choose the device, apps, the way they connect with the apps. HP is now trying to help them embrace the reality of mobility as it is right now. "They're going through a change process," going from denial to the need to control it. "We are encouraging our customers to really embrace it" and HP is offering a transformation experience workshop, focusing on BYOD, cloud, apps, etc. "They are absolutely working projects in these area, but maybe don't have a complete strategy," and that is where HP can help them.
In mobility, "every customer has a different level of maturity. Ultimately our aim is to help them with the end user product." The device ownership is mostly in the hands of employees, as Winner explained that each employee would bring in at least one personal device.
Commenting on the state of networking, Winner said HP was doing a great number of interesting things int he area, focusing on the whole move to software defined networking. "The network needs to be able to respond differently. Today, the network is just a rigid thing," Winner explained, stating HP was able to provide a level of intelligence.
In that BDI is concerned, "we're through the hype and it's reality. BDI is just one approach, we look at the whole aspect of server compute," Winner said.
Asked to create a bumper sticker for the Barcelona event, Winner chose: "Universal access to people, apps, and data."
