Big Data takes conservation efforts to a new level #HPBigData2015
by Terry Fields | Aug 17, 2015
Big Data tools and software continue to find use in all types of enterprises. And it’s now being used to assist farm conservation decisions.
“We built a system that satisfies the needs of our network,” said Eric Fegraus, senior director of Information Systems, TEAM Network, Conservation International. “And not only have we done that, but we’ve made a system that’s replicable and scalable.”
Fegraus, along with Jorge Ahumada, executive director for TEAM Network, talked with theCUBE, SiliconANGLE’s Media production team, at the HP Big Data Conference in Boston, MA. During the interview, Fegraus and Ahumada explained how new tools are expediting the gathering and analysis process, allowing the organization to hone in on accuracy and actionable data analysis.
Data without action is worthless
“We can have all the analytics we want, but if we don’t take action it’s not going to do anything,” Ahumada said. “And we’re starting to see that in TEAM Network now.”
TEAM Network focuses on climate and natural data in particular. And utilizing a specific combination of automated image filtering algorithms, the organization’s software combination picks out familiar key registration points that typically occur across all known species and other objects, both natural and man-made. “We can then better identify new species, address population issues within species, and then get together and enact a plan,” Ahumada explained.
For example in Uganda, by collaborating with the local park managers, the team was able to help pinpoint a new cat species and its significant decline in population. Without cooperation, careful observation and analytical tools, the team may have never known of this new cat species or its population problem.
Another example of how the TEAM Network group presses the boundaries of Big Data is how it also utilizes software to analyze data gathered by the sun in order to target areas of heavy deforestation.
Conservation International is working with various countries and will continue to team up with park managers worldwide to bring to its conservation efforts the most accurate data analysis that modern science and technology can provide.
