Wayfair LLC engineering engages problems with multiple attack points. And in an industry of buzz word wars concerning storage and Big Data, Jordan Chernev, system architect and manager of data technology, asks how far we can push this technology and what’s the best way to provide value for the customer?
By approaching an issue from multiple angles, Chernev and Wayfair are developing unorthodox solutions to problems related to storage for Big Data. Chernev asks, “How do we get ahead of that?”
theCUBE hosts John Furrier and Dave Vellante believe the solution lies in software integration. Currently, when a problem crops up, there is only one software or app to solve that problem. This is true of older, more traditional products, as well as some of the more recent developments. Chernev calls integration “a different challenge.”
Solving Big Data issues with engineering
Wayfair’s chief technical officer started the company’s own off-brand version of a Cloud in 2002. Due to the way the data center is structured, Chernev says it has better security and compliance. Currently, Wayfair runs three data centers globally. While Chernev remarks that Wayfair is unlikely to start using a Cloud soon, he did say, “I would use Cloud for problems that require elasticity.” He saw the advantages of Cloud as elasticity, the ability to deal with unpredictable data and use-case based development.
In the past 12 months, Wayfair has experienced tremendous growth. While the company is trying to solve Big Data issues with engineering, it continues to “literally, grow, grow, grow,” according to Chernev. Wayfair recently released mobile apps that can be downloaded to your phone or tablet.
