When Hewlett-Packard Co. purchased Vertica, it did not pay it much attention. “It was this diamond in the rough, and they didn’t know what to do with it,” Furrier said. Thanks to HP’s CEO Meg Whitman, and the creation of HAVEn, Vertica has become the “Crown Jewel” of HP Software, heralding in an explosion of software development, attracting cutting-edge developers and bringing in a fresh customer base for HP. Reviewing the morning’s keynote speech at HP Big Data Conference 2015 in Boston, MA, theCUBE’s John Furrier and Dave Vellante discuss how the conference is now “about developers” and share their surprise at the different, more relaxed approach of the keynote. In particular, the duo discussed how Robert Youngjohns, EVP of HP Software, “hit a nerve” making jokes and taking jabs at Tableau Software, Inc. for being just a “pretty package with no substance.” According to Furrier, the big questions of the conference include:” What is HP’s role in building out its clients’ Big Data strategies? and What is the Cloud platform that will power the next generation of analytics? Variety is a ‘big problem’ Furrier’s take away from the keynote is Michael Stonebraker’s, Ph.D., CTO and cofounder of Tamr, Inc.’s, observation: “Variety is going to be the big problem.” With multiple data sources from technology, such as the Internet of Things and self-driving cars, requiring real-time analytics, Furrier sees “a bigger picture going on around variety.” Systems of intelligence Vellante’s take away statement focuses on how the “epicenter is moving from systems of record to systems of intelligence.” Both hosts will be focusing on exploring these subjects in SiliconANGLE and theCUBE’s coverage of HP Big Data Conference 2015, including hearing from HP customers on what they are doing and how they are transforming, as well as HP executives on HP’s role in building out the analytics pipeline. @theCUBE #HPBigData2015
