Of note, they also talked about their insights into the future of the Big Data open-source world. The price of complexity The conversation started as Vellante offered his thoughts on the changes in the Big Data market. He said companies are moving beyond the notion of finding return on investment in the reduction of costs. People need to rethink, he said, because the applications are different and they’re transformational. But with this fragmented ecosystem, businesses are moving their Big Data operations to the Cloud because it’s simple. Furrier agreed, stating that Hadoop providers needed to figure out a way to align their cost structure with operational expectations. Simplicity, he said, must be shown to break through this glass wall. Winners and losers Companies want better digital interactions, products and engagements, Vellante said. Big Data plays a critical role in that. In this data layer, he said, the big players and leaders will make the money. Is there enough room, he asked, for other companies? There will be winners and losers, Furrier agreed, but being a bit player in a huge market is not a bad thing. Complexity and cost of ownership is the Achilles’ heel for Hadoop. If these companies want to find their market before big vendors own the whole thing, they’ll have to overcome this weakness. @theCUBE #HS16Dublin
