If Hadoop has crossed the chasm, what’s it mean for customers? | #HadoopSummit by Heather Johnson | Jul 21, 2015 During Hadoop Summit 2015, more than one industry expert discussed with theCUBE whether Hadoop had “crossed the chasm.” Insiders have certainly noticed the increase in use cases and bigger names that have come on board. But how do the customers view this chasm, if at all? “The chasm provides us with a ‘Where’s Waldo’ type of metric,” said Shaun Connolly, Hortonworks, Inc.’s VP of Corporate Strategy. “It’s palpable internally. I agree with the numbers: 26 percent adopted [Hadoop] so far, 11 percent coming in the next year. That’s an almost 40 percent growth. From a market adoption perspective, it’s like a barbell: The space in between the barbells is starting to fill up, and that’s where the meat of the market adoption happens.” Hadoop being applied to IoT Connolly also noted interesting developments in applications for Hadoop. “We’re seeing supply chain optimization and a variety of use cases,” he said. “I would argue the machine and sensor and the Internet of Things use cases represent about 30 percent of the interest in our platform. So I think there’s something there that hasn’t materialized yet.” @theCUBE #HadoopSummit
