The Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing conference has been a powerful force in bringing more women to the tech field. Among other things, it has provided a forum for women to meet and work together to solve the problems they face in the workforce. As the conference has grown, so too has its ability to bring opportunity to the women’s cause.
To talk about this growth of opportunity, John Furrier and Jeff Frick, cohosts of theCUBE, from the SiliconANGLE Media team, invited Grace Hopper veteran Wei Lin, senior director of engineering, eBusiness at Symantec Corp., to speak with them at the Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing 2015 conference.
Conversations about opportunity
The conversation started by looking at Lin’s experience with the Grace Hopper conference. Lin explained that over the years, she’s seen a change in focus for career women. Now, people were looking at women at all levels in the workforce, from new hires to CEOs.
The conversations have also changed. While the conference has always been a job fair and a forum to talk about women’s issues, she said, there have also been more discussions about technology itself and inventing new tech solutions.
Dynamics and social media
Women in senior executive positions, Lin said, continue to shoulder the heavy weight of their companies. However, it also falls on them to maintain the dynamic by mentoring the upcoming generation of women to take on that charge.
Fortunately, the younger generation will be well-prepared. Social media has become a powerful tool in the campaign for workplace equality. Lin pointed out how social media has allowed the next generation to learn from their peers as well as their mentors. This puts them in a better place to fight for their cause than any previous generation.
