Content delivery company Fastly Inc. is one of the first users of the Google Cloud Interconnect platform, announced Lee Chen, head of Product at Fastly. He said his company is “aimed at delivering the content fast and all the way to the edge.” Chen explained at the Google Cloud Platform Live event that Fastly was eager to join Google Cloud Interconnect because it allows the company “to accelerate any content that’s hosted on Google cloud storage.”
For Fastly, acceleration is essential, because its value proposition is all-around speed. The company helps clients get around caching by enabling them to “instantly purge a cache in 150 milliseconds or less.” Fastly also makes it easier for clients to achieve transparency, offering them a real-time view of streaming logs. Google has also been a good fit for Fastly, Chen added, because customers using Google Cloud Storage are “about four times faster when paired with the product accelerator.”
When it comes to delivering content within a mobile network, Chen said there’s only so much optimization that Fastly and Google can facilitate, simply because cell networks are managed by a middle man. The cell tower functions as a bottle neck. What Fastly and Google can do, Chen explained, is optimize getting into the network or low-level optimization, like iterating performance.
Chen sees mobile as “hugely important to the way we interact with the world today.” This is why Fastly believes “figuring out how to get data effectively across a mobile network is essential.”
