When it comes to Software-Defined Networking (SDN), Google’s Cloud Networking Product Manager Morgan Dollard said his company is “bringing it back up into software” and “orchestrating at a global level,” in order to expand functionality for cloud customer. Indeed, Dollard relayed that orchestration is the main challenge that Google is looking to solve with its SDN projects.
SDN and containerization, explained Dollard, are “two ways of approaching the same thing.” At their cores, both concepts are “abstraction away from hardware-based models.” A layer above the physical aspect of the network, people are enabled to “start doing radically different things,” Dollard commented, especially around orchestration.
As cloud performance improves, so does the adoption curve. Companies are “starting to bridge that gap by going to third party providers,” said Dollard. He predicts that trend to continue until the market reaches “a level of maturity.” Even now, he’s seeing a fundamental shift in the way start ups are built: While the “need for connectivity still exists,” startups “aren’t buying servers or routers.” Instead, “they’re putting all their production applications in the cloud.” Which is why Dollard sees the SND market as “ripe for innovation” in the coming years
