But now the company could be facing some opposition from Google’s newest database technology, Cloud Spanner. Telecommunications companies are looking to have the same power and scalability as Oracle while shifting away from paying tens to hundreds of millions of dollars to accomplish it, according to Danielle Royston (pictured, right), chief executive officer of Optiva Inc., which provides communications service providers with monetization and subscriber management solutions. “When we looked at [Cloud] Spanner, it was not only capable of replacing Oracle, but it gave us that [scalability and database] 10 times faster at the reduced cost,” Royston said. Before, Optiva’s customers had mainly on-premises data centers and servers, so they would have to pre-plan for whatever growth might occur, such as at Christmas. “When you look at Spanner and Google Cloud, now we’re not having to pre-purchase that. It can literally auto-scale. So telcos don’t need to pre-purchase that and are ready if, for example, a natural disaster hits and the amount of use on those servers increases,” Royston stated. They discussed the advantages of Cloud Spanner and how it compares to Oracle’s databases. (* Disclosure below.) The best of both worlds Cloud Spanner is the only relational database that can scale globally while providing asset transactions, according to Srivastava. It helps reduce maintenance and complexity, allowing companies to focus on their businesses. “We are the only relational database that can scale globally while providing asset transactions,” she said. This can be done with up to five lines of availability while in the cloud. And because it’s all elastic, companies don’t have to pre-provision the entire thing. “It’s a no-compromise database because you get performance, scale, flexibility and manageability in one product,” Srivastava stated. Cloud Spanner takes away the burden of maintenance, infrastructure management, and even tuning of the database, she explained. Its tools also include automatic charting and automatic load balancing, so even the smallest levels of management are done for the client. “It’s the only database that does strong consistency across the globe. Using your database as a content distribution network for your transactional asset consistent data, that’s what we do,” Srivastava concluded.
