Google lays out how it aims to accelerate app modernization

Application modernization can mean different things for many cloud users. Google LLC has chosen to define it based on its full offering of cloud tools and services for developers, as part of a series of announcements being made this week.
In particular, the cloud provider today announced the launch of its Google Cloud Application Modernization Program.
“The biggest news that we have is how we are going to help companies get started with application modernization,” said Aparna Sinha (pictured, left), director of product management at Google. “The CAMP program is holistic, and it brings together many of our capabilities, including Cloud Code, Cloud CI/CD, Cloud Run, which is our serverless offering, and it also includes [Google Kubernetes Engine] and Anthos best practices. With Google CAMP, we cover all aspects of the application lifecycle, and we think it’s extremely important for companies to have this capability.”
Sinha spoke with Stu Miniman, host of theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio, during the Google Cloud Next OnAir event. She was joined by Pali Bhat (right), vice president of product management and design at Google, and they discussed the latest updates for Google Anthos and growing customer interest in application modernization.
New cluster management tool
In addition to CAMP, Google also announced a series of updates specifically for Anthos, its multicloud application management platform that was released for general availability last year. The updates included a bare-metal offering where Anthos can be run on-premises and at the edge without needing a hypervisor, tools for Speech-to-Text and identity solutions, and a new cluster management capability.
“This lets customers bring any Kubernetes conforming cluster onto Anthos and still take advantage of the advanced capabilities that Anthos provides,” Bhat explained. “Configuring these large instances involves a lot of handcrafting today, and we can provide declarative configuration so you automate all of that away. We are providing that service automation layer on top of any Kubernetes conformant cluster with Anthos now.”
The Google executive noted that events of recent months have placed a premium on operational efficiency as applications increasingly run critical aspects of the business.
“In Q2 of 2020, we saw more than 100,000 companies use our application modernization platform across GKE, Anthos, Cloud Functions, Cloud Run and our DevOps tools,” Bhat said. “We’re seeing tremendous momentum around our application modernization business because it plays directly into imperatives around efficiency, cost saving, business innovation and agility.”
