Independent DevOps platform necessary for evolving multicloud world
Are the days of operating in a single cloud over? As an increasing number of organizations demand multicloud services to avoid vendor lock-in and maximize computing performance, it seems that single-cloud environments are on the way out.
“It’s no longer that you pick one cloud and that’s where everything’s going to run,” said Brendan O’Leary (pictured), senior solutions manager at GitLab Inc. “You’re going to have acquisitions. You’re going to have the desire to have a negotiating position with your vendors. You’re going to want to use functionality that may be only in one of the clouds.”
From project planning and source-code management to CI/CD and monitoring, GitLab provides a complete developer operations platform delivered as a single application. And the company is seeing a multicloud revolution with its customers. “We’re really seeing multicloud become more of the norm,” O’Leary added.
While companies may still operate in a primary cloud for deployment, O’Leary believes they will still use more than one cloud. “That’s why we think it’s critical to have a DevOps platform that’s independent from that so you can deploy everywhere,” he stated.
O’Leary spoke with John Furrier (@furrier), host of theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s mobile livestreaming studio, during the ESCAPE/19 event in New York City. They discussed why it’s important to focus on business metrics when making tech decisions and the key factors to assessing multicloud (see the full interview with transcript here). Don’t get bogged down in tech, features
When making business decisions surrounding multicloud, O’Leary advises not to get bogged down with the technology and platform features.
“What we’re really looking for is the business value of being able to have a single view, a single application, a single platform for your developers to be able to deploy,” he said.
Efficiency, governance and visibility are three key factors to assess in the multicloud world, according to O’Leary. But these factors are fluid and weighted based on the business at hand, he added.
“You may be in a more highly regulated environment where governance is the number one [concern]. But I think everyone has those governments concerns. None of us want wake up to a security call that we should have known about,” he stated.
GitLab is now seeing the industry move toward a single tool for a DevOps tool chain and lifecycle.
“We want to be able to have one way that developers deploy code. And, we’re seeing that kind of consolidation in the market, and we’ve had great success with that so far,” O’Leary concluded.
