Faster, stronger, smaller: How cloud is changing the role of the IT department | #EC16
by R. Danes | Mar 8, 2016
Cloud continues to subsume previously bulky and expensive hard technology into itself, and communications continue to make their way in. Technological disruption in businesses and life is being matched by the disruption of IT itself thanks to the cloud — and it constitutes “a seismic shift” for the industry, according to Alan Masarek, CEO of Vonage.
Masarek, a former Googler, told John Furrier, host of theCUBE, from the SiliconANGLE Media team, that although IT professionals need not fear for their livelihoods, they do need to evolve into the new paradigm.
“You still have IT departments — it’s just that the role is changing,” he stated. Masarek argued that the beauty of cloud-native and cloud-enabled IT is that everyone can move much more quickly, collaborating, experimenting, spinning up and spinning down solutions at a rapid pace.
The technology changes, but the goals remain the same, said Maserek: Greater productivity and profits.
Unified Communications as as Service
Furrier and Masarek spoke about the consumerization of IT and how Vonage is using cloud to make very complex technologies accessible to end users. Masarek said that Vonage invented voiceover IP 15 years ago, and their commitment to device agnostic, integrated communications services continues. Their focus on business as opposed to residential is growing rapidly, he said.
“You get this integration, which is really changing the way people work and the way companies operate,” he said.
