Flash and XtremIO enables the transformation of Vidant Health’s data storage | #emcworld

Andy Fenselau, senior director of Product Marketing at EMC Corp., and James Eason, manager of Storage Services at Vidant Health, stopped by theCUBE during EMC World 2015 to talk about XtremIO and how it has helped solidify Vidant Health’s data storage practices.
The discussion started with the benefits that XtremIO has brought to Vidant Health. Eason related how the company experimented with the flash storage technology and quickly saw its advantages. His people were surprised by its speed and ease of use. Meanwhile, XtremIO’s performance freed up a lot of time among his team, making the company more agile.
Developing a new infrastructure
Things turned to the story of how Vidant Health first came to XtremIO. Eason explained how the company was running out of space and quickly outgrowing its storage plans. He found XtremIO would meet the company’s needs for expansion, and made a major purchase. The benefits were immediate. His team found XtremIO easy to set up and use, and the incredible speed allowed them to compile reports that used to take two days in less than an hour.
Support from the vendor was also a consideration. In the health field especially, it’s important for a company to make sure their applications run to very specific standards. XtremIO and EMC provided that support, helping Vidant Health run tests on the system to make sure the technology fit its needs. The results of those tests were very impressive, and made it easy to buy into a flash storage solution.
Rethinking operations
The tools and performance of XtremIO have lead to a rethinking in how it runs its operations, Eason explained. Pulling reports in real time allows them to make more data-driven decisions, while the ease of use frees up his team to work on other projects. The ability to copy the data into new instances without having to buy more hardware enables teams across the company to model and test their applications in new ways.
“Think about the potential to bring in an all-flash datacenter,” he said, “and making that key and paramount.”
