ScaleIO: optimized for performance and prepared for any storage environment | #emcworld
by Heather Johnson | May 11, 2015
At EMC World 2015, EMC Corp. announced partner VCE Company, LLC’s VxRack, which enables customers to consume EMC ScaleIO as a software and as an integrated converged infrastructure appliance, according to VP and GM Boaz Palgi, VP and GM of ScaleIO/ASD at EMC. ScaleIO also announced that it is available in a “free and frictionless manner” for testing purposes, Palgi said in an interview with theCUBE.
Eliminating the need to run multiple layers of storage
ScaleIO eliminates the need to run multiple layers of storage. “Years ago, people wanted an application that would take care of resilience and availability of data, but they couldn’t run it on the same server, because the single application on the server took all the resources,” Palgi said. “The need for a second storage server grew into the SAN industry. Servers today have ample resources in terms of CPU memory, network, flash … today you can run a product like ScaleIO, which is an enterprise class storage system, alongside apps and databases.”
ScaleIO is also prepared for a flash-only environment. “ScaleIO works with flash, whether SSD or VCE cards, as well as with magnetic disks, etc.,” Palgi said. “ScaleIO is optimized for performance rather than capacity optimization. With a performance-optimized layout, you don’t get capacity optimization, but you do get cost savings with the ability to buy your media of choice.”
