John Roese, EMC Senior Vice President and CTO- with John Furrier and Dave Vellante at EMC World 2013 - theCUBE John Roese, Senior Vice President and CTO of EMC, stopped by theCube during our live coverage of EMC World 2013 and discussed current trends in convergence and IT with hosts John Furrier and Dave Vellante. Roese started off his discussion on convergence by noting, "We used to think of consumer enterprise as three different domains—different vendors, different solutions, and different technologies. Now, as we look around, we're realizing these things are bumping into each other everywhere." Roese pointed to hybrid cloud as an example, stating that it's impossible to establish a hybrid cloud based purely on enterprise technology because half of it will be living in the service provider world. "It's the intersection between them where the action is happening, and, quite frankly, in order to navigate it, you have to think about both sides." Roese continued by giving us insight into a macro-trend called the "consumerization of IT." It's one of the biggest challenges in enterprise IT, and, according to Roese, it's keeping CIO's up at night. "It's the idea that end users are gravitating toward using consumer technology for enterprise purposes." While there are opportunities to capitalize on this, it remains unbalancing for the people involved since it involves learning about new technologies, thinking about new ecosystems, and incorporating new systems into existing IT strategies. "There's no shortage in understanding that these technologies and tools are inevitabilities, useful, and need to be navigated," Roese stated about these transitions. "It's disruptive evolution," he went on, presenting his own term for managing this process, "You pull your existing technology into the new world and make it compatible with the old world. You have an open mind to the fact that the new technologies may inevitably disrupt some of your thinking and operating models."
