IBM continues to fine-tune DSX in concert with Hortonworks
Nearly one year ago, IBM Corp. announced plans to combine its data science platform with Hortonworks Inc.’s software for data management. What IBM brought to the partnership was its Data Science Experience, or DSX, solution, designed to let developers create analytics models and machine learning tools quickly.
Since then, IBM has been fine-tuning its data science model by adding tools for DSX customers to access information stored within the Hortonworks Data Platform data lakes.
“DSX and Hortonworks are integrated to the point where you can manage your Hadoop cluster and you can work on your Python models within DSX, and then push it remotely to be executed where your data is,” said Piotr Mierzejewski (pictured), program director of development DSX, data science and machine learning at IBM. “That’s one of the huge value propositions.”
Mierzejewski spoke with James Kobielus (@jameskobielus), host of theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s mobile livestreaming studio, at the DataWorks Summit in Berlin, Germany. They discussed current and soon-to-be added features for DSX and the use of data analytics tools in various enterprise environments. (* Disclosure below.)
SPSS Modeler rebranded for DSX
The latest edition of DSX includes a number of key features for developers, including IBM’s SPSS Modeler that offers predictive analytics to unearth data patterns, assist decision making, and gain more forecasting accuracy. “As of DSX 1.2, we have integrated an SPSS modeler, redesigned and rebranded,” Mierzejewski said. “This is amazing technology from IBM that has been around for a while.”
In the next two months, IBM plans to add natural language processing along with text and sentiment analysis to DSX, according to Mierzejewski. The goal is to offer customers full-scale flexibility, whether the data resides on-premises or in the cloud.
“With DSX, we designed it to deploy, run and scale everywhere,” Mierzejewski said. “Now you will have this extendable collaborative platform that can install and run in data centers without needing to access the Internet. That’s critical.”
