Danes | Jun 21, 2016 What you may not know about container technology is that it’s been around for decades. However, in its raw form, it was too complicated for all but a few highly skilled developers to utilize. Docker, Inc. didn’t invent containers; it democratized their use so that now even novice developers can build impressive applications quickly. Suffice to say, in IT these days, the race is indeed to the swift. Customer don’t just want to know what you can do; they want to know how fast you can do it. Scott Johnston, COO of Docker, says that Docker owes its success to delivering speed and ease of use to customers — and in order to monetize, it will have to keep the pace, so to speak. “The currency is speed,” he told Brian Gracely (@bgracely) and John Furrier (@furrier), cohosts of theCUBE, from the SiliconANGLE Media team. “The currency for the enterprise application teams is speed. And so how do we get in there and help them ship applications faster?” Johnston said. Running a tight ship Johnston spoke enthusiastically about Docker’s new management services. He said that companies are embracing their offer to pull their development operations together and keep deployment speeds up. He said that companies are a little overwhelmed with the activity that can result from democratization and are saying, “Wow, my devs are going crazy with open source.” He continued: “And then, we come in and say, ‘Hey, let me help you with that.'” Neutral territory Johnston said that speed and portability are major value propositions for Docker, and its cloud offering, Docker Cloud, enables those propositions. Docker Cloud simply drives workloads — it is not where they land — so it is agnostic and can be used with any other cloud service. “Docker Ccloud allows them to go in with a credit card, swipe and get the benefits of container management — Dockerized app management without involving us or our sales cycle or our marketing,” he said. #dockercon #theCUBE
