Docker ushers in a new open-source era| #DockerCon
The rise of open-container technology and Docker is changing the face of computer programming. The new open-container technology has become a serious game-changer.
Steve Hoffman and Rick Fast, senior principal engineers from Orbitz Worldwide, Inc., have been using open-source technology from the beginning. Hoffman told theCUBE at DockerCon 2015, “Things like writing a web server … is not a competitive advantage.”
Open-source technology brings production improvements
From the beginning, they have embraced the idea of sharing with the community and focusing on what is important to them. Now, Docker gives engineers more control.
“It kind of let us focus on more interesting architectural and operational problems,” Fast explained. Programmers can focus strictly on coding, and engineers can focus on issues like capacity and infrastructure. The development means that there are fewer rules for developers to focus on; they can get to work faster and speed up production.
The only difficulty with the new technology is the constant improvements and changes. To cope with this, Orbitz has been taking all of the new technologies and using them in a way that allows for change. It makes sure it can adapt quickly if a better technology is revealed.
