The Docker-Microsoft team-up delivers the first GPU support for Docker Desktop
Docker Inc. continues to expand its relationship with Microsoft, and they have collaborated to create the first graphics processing unit support on Microsoft Windows for Docker. This will help integrate Docker Desktop as a main desktop application for working with containers with WSL 2, the Windows Subsystem for Linux.
“Bringing GPU support to WSL 2 … means that we will be able to provide and give you support through Docker Desktop for container workloads that people are working on,” said Ben De St Paer-Gotch (pictured), principal product manager at Docker. “It’s the first GPU support for Docker Desktop on Mac or Windows.”
De St Paer-Gotch spoke with John Furrier, host of theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio, during DockerCon Live. They discussed the impact that this integration between WSL 2 and Docker Desktop will have, as well Docker’s evolution as a company. (* Disclosure below.)
Docker emphasizes developers as company envisions future of applications
When Docker sold its enterprise business to Mirantis Inc. late last year, the company pivoted and began to provide both open-source and paid developer tools. This partnership with Microsoft enhances Docker’s new emphasis on developers and creating the best experience on Windows.
For a developer, there are two focuses within a developer’s life cycle, according to De St Paer-Gotch: the first focus is the creative work of writing code, and the second focus is getting the code out to production.
“Our mantra is that … a developer should spend as much as their time as possible creating new and exciting things,” De St Paer-Gotch stated. “We’re really trying to work out how we take those boring, repetitive pieces and how do we make them just vanish like magic from new users or how do we reduce the friction for the experience from users?”
Docker has really set the technology industry on the path of applications, and there is a huge demand for developers to build the next wave of applications, according to De St Paer-Gotch. It’s going to be more important than ever to have more tools in a real-time culture, especially in the age of a multicloud environment.
“The rate of creation is just insane; it’s exponential growth of us producing more and more applications and connecting more and more devices given,” De St Paer-Gotch said. “It’s like 60% of companies are now more than one cloud provider — maybe even … like 80%. It’s ridiculous.”
