New container tech implementation requires empathy, trust
Empathy, a welcoming community and trust are essential to propelling the burgeoning culture of containers’ virtualized application management technology and its dedicated software developers forward. Discussing these industry-shaping concepts at the recently concluded DockerCon event in San Francisco were Bret Fisher (pictured, right), author of the course “Docker Mastery: The Complete Toolset From a Docker Captain,” and Nirmal Mehta (pictured, left), Docker captain and chief technologist at Booz Allen Hamilton Inc.
“We’ve been identified as folks that are approachable and have a mandate to be people that can help answer those initial questions — help align folks that have questions with the right resources,” Mehta said. “And also just make it like a soft, warm, fuzzy kind of introduction to the community.”
Fisher and Mehta spoke with Lisa Martin (@LuccaZara), co-host of theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s mobile livestreaming studio, and guest host John Troyer (@jtroyer), chief reckoner at TechReckoning, during DockerCon. They discussed the role of community and empathy when building a new information technology culture and working with developers.
Create trust and empathy for new culture
Because containers are rapidly changing the way people implement technology and software, it’s important to create a culture of trust, according to Mehta. This means people can come to the leaders of a company and talk about real problems.
“You have to have that top-down understanding of where you are now as an organization and where you want to be in the future. And understanding that this kind of legacy, siloed team mindset is no longer how you can achieve that,” Mehta said.
The biggest barrier to implementing containers and new technology is trying to bite off too much at a time, according to Fisher. And this is really why walking alongside developers during the process is important.
“Helping them build the tools they need, and what we call a stack, a stack of tools, that ultimately create a full production solution,” Fisher concluded.
